10 Tips to Make Long-Distance Relationships Work

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Jay Ong It’s not easy being in a long-distance relationship. We often hear that those involved in long-distance relationships eventually drift apart and break up. That does not mean that long-distance relationships won’t work. It can work and has worked for many. As in any form of relationship, there should be a strong commitment from you and your partner to overcome the odds in a long-distance relationship. The following are 10 tips that will help you succeed in a long-distance relationship: 1. Set relationship rules and expectations from the start Have a mutual understanding that you will not date others, that you will communicate daily, and that you’ll see each other once every one, two, or three months in person. 2. Communicate daily Make use of modern communications media. If you can’t afford to call on the phone daily, use mobile text messaging, e-mail or instant messaging. Invest in a webcam and make use of video calling feature offered by most instant messaging software today. 3. Be clear about your feelings Being ambiguous about yourself would only create a guessing game that you don’t need in your long-distance relationship. Be articulate with your partner about your feelings, expectations, clashing issues, and aspirations. When communicating with your partner, be honest. Keep your partner in the loop of things happening around your life and get your partner to reciprocate. 4. Provide constant reassurance of your feelings Don’t be afraid to say “I love you” often. Build the confidence in your partner that you are committed in the relationship. 5. Send care packages Send personalized gift packages, be it cards, stuffed animals, photos, or collectibles. Be creative as you can get in personalizing the gift. Your partner will appreciate the effort that you’ve put in. 6. Meet regularly Plan regular meetings and avoid making postponements at your fancy. As you do not see each other daily in person, take the extra mile to make the meeting special. 7. Trust each other Trust is key in a long-distance relationship. Having constant doubts about your partner’s motives will actually be detrimental to the relationship. 8. Be patient You may feel things move slowly in a long-distance relationship. It is one of those odds you have to learn to overcome. With patience, true love will come with the test of time. 9. Make special occasions extra special On special occasions like Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, or your partner’s birthday, make these occasions extra special. Take this opportunity to talk to your loved one on the phone longer or spend more time chatting online. Post a private video of yourself with your special greeting on an online video service. Perhaps you could also make a surprise visit. 10. Keep yourself busy You can’t be brooding over your distant loved one every second. Get a life. Involve yourself in activities that you are passionate about. When you get together, share your passion with your partner and he/she will find you a more interesting person. Also, don’t forget spending social time with your family and friends. Having a relationship doesn’t mean you have to burn bridges. Long-distance relationship need not be dreadful. It can be fun. As the saying goes, “distance makes the heart grow fonder”. Be appreciative of the fact that you’re special in someone’s heart even though that someone is miles away. With the right ingredients of trust, patience, and most importantly, commitment, your long-distance relationship holds much promise. How To Approach a Girl With Kissing

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Ronnie Man In kissing a girl whose experience with osculation is limited, it is a good thing to work up to the kissing of the lips and only an arrant fool seizes hold of such a girl, when they are comfortably seated on the sofa, and suddenly put his face into hers and smacks her lips. The right is, the first thing he should do is to arrange it so that the girl is seated against the arm of the sofa while he is seated at her side. In this way, she cannot get away from him when he becomes serious in his attentions. This done, on some situation or another, such as a gallant attempt to adjust the cushions behind her, he manages to breakout from his arm, first around the back of the sofa and then, gradually, around her shoulders. If she flinches, don’t worry. If she flinches and makes an outcry, don’t worry. If she flinches, makes an outcry and tries to get up from the sofa, don’t worry. Hold her gently but firmly, and put away her fears with kind, reassuring words. Remember what Shakespeare said about “a woman’s no.” However, if she flinches and makes an outcry, a loud, stentorian outcry, mind you, and starts to smack your face, then start to worry or start to get yourself out of a bad situation. Such girls are not to be trifled with … or kissed. It is such as they, in most cases, who still believe the story of the stork which brings babies because of the consequences of a kiss. Will War in the Middle East Eventually Begin the Battle of Armageddon?

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Christine Bettridge Will history eventually disintegrate into a global holocaust of devastating chaos like many religious people say? Is the present situation in the Middle East that religious folks say are pointing at to give their claims weight? They are insisting that these events have been arranged specifically to forecast the day that Christ will rise up and walk the earth again at judgment. What makes this claim different then what they have asserted repeatedly in the passed? It all goes back to what the Bible says about Armageddon. Armageddon is mentioned in the New Testament once, and that is in Revelation 16:16. The phrase ”Armageddon” is often used metaphorically. This is in keeping with fictional stories that focuses on apocalyptic themes of the world ending. However, Revelation 16:16 is covered with allusions concerning the Old Testament. This is because the New Testament is largely rooted in the ideas and descriptions of Hebrew sacred writings. Yet, writers have rewritten, tailored, and combined thought instead of quoting directly from the Old Testament. Why? It was necessary for writers to do this because they wanted to relate to an environment which would enable them to address themselves as they existed at that time. In taking liberally from the Old Testament imagery they were able to place a New Testament, first century relevance, viewpoint on them. Many Asia Minor Christians are familiar with the Old Testament, but those of us who are not some explanations are in order. The word Armageddon comes from the word ”Harmageddon” which means mountain or hill of Megiddo. Megiddo was a hill where many gory conflicts took place. A lot of Jewish scholars and interested persons of Hebrew history may know that the Megiddo and its surrounding area was a well-known field of war where quite a few unsuccessful military battles occurred. On this famous hill, Deborah and Barak defeated the Cannaanites, this is mentioned in Judges 5:19. Then there was Judges 7, where Gideon defeated the Midianites. Although, these battles are seen as accomplishments there are less positive images that center around Megiddo that have imprinted themselves on Israelite consciousness. An example, is in 2 Kings 9:27 where Ahaziah died on Megiddo after being pierced by Jehus arrow, and in 2 Kings 23:29 where tragically good King Josiah was brought down at the hands of Pharaoh Necho. King Josiah death brought on an upsurge of communal grief by his fellow Jews that was recorded in Zechariah 12:11. Megiddo, due to its far reaching past, has occupied a revered place in the minds of true believers. Megiddo holds a place of such importance in the minds of first century Jews and Christians. Consequently, near the end of the first century, ill-treated Christians of Asia Minor and their desire to overcome and endure painful persecutions was shown in the course of the battle being waged between Satan in the form of Imperial Rome and the power of God, the Messiah and the saints. In an earlier period, Christians needed hope of victory over their enemies. During our day and age Christians for the same thing but it won’t be fulfilled in an end time battle of Armageddon but rather a spiritual battle. Encouragement was what Christians needed to remain sound in their faith, even while they were being battered by their fellow human beings. Harmageddon in the book of Revelation added to their assurance as a reminder which symbolized victory. The book of Revelation being the message communicated that God will win. The assurance that they were looking for “must shortly come to pass,” not two thousand years later. Revelation 1:1. Rest assured, there will be no ”Armageddon” because the phrase is simply symbolic, and has no connection to the fantasy of a future world war. Christine Bettridge has loved writing since childhood. She has written Plays, poetry and many articles. Her latest e-book End Time Secrets recently released by Cypress Street Publishing has caused an order craze in the religious world. Party Planning Made Easier Than You Thought It Could Be

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Gail Leino Party planning is something that needs to be done, but honestly not many of us really like to do it. The cooking, the cleaning, the picking of the menuthere are plenty of things that we just have to do. Yet, it can be so overwhelming, to say the least, to do these things without concentrating on the reason for the party to begin with. If you can not relax for your party because of party planning being too stressful, you need some additional tips to make it that much easier. Here are those tips. Dont be afraid to ask for some help. By enlisted friends or relatives to help out, you help them to feel more important and more useful to you. In fact, they are probably going to love it. They can help with any aspect that they are good at. If you have a baker in the family, ask them to help with desert. If you have someone in the family that knows a lot about alcohol, enlist their help too. Party planning means writing it all down. If you want to plan out just what to do with this party without trying to memorize it all, you need to track it through pen and paper. Getting it written down also simplifies the process to allow you to know just what needs to be done instead of trying to remember it all. Take shortcuts along the way. Why not hire someone to cater your party? Party planning can be made much easier when you enlist the help of professional services to come in and handle certain aspects of the party. You can also delegate the cleaning, decorating and even the cleaning up afterwards too. Lets face it. While we would all love to do all of the party planning on our own, it makes much more sense to enlist some help along the way. Increase Your Chances of Getting Out of a Traffic Ticket, Written by a Former Police Officer

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Robert Davis To all readers: You may have seen countless television shows about the police involved in arrests of bank robbers, rapists, and participating in shootouts. But most police officers’ time is spent on traffic stops and domestic calls. This particular article will deal with traffic stops. While a police officer, I probably stopped thousands of vehicles for various traffic violations, including stopping vehicles appearing suspicious. I will get straight to the point as to how to increase your chances of getting out of an impending ticket, as this space I have been alloted is small. The things I’m about to reveal were taught in the police academy. First, pull over as soon as possible, as soon as you hear a siren or see the lights. Why? Police officers are taught that most drivers with guns or illegal contrabands need time to dispose of them. You will greatly relax the officers’ vocational and natural suspicions if done. Next, try your best to get out of your vehicle before he gets out of his vehicle. But you must have your hands in plain view. Why? Police officers know that a fugitive or criminal wants to put the police in an awkward position by having the officer approach his territory. Besides, most if not all criminals instinctively do not want to approach any situation if they are wrong. Think of it like this. When you stole a cookie or anything from anybody, you would never “seek” out, be led to, or want to be anywhere near the authority in question. This is a natural, humanistic behavior. As you approach the police vehicle, you will notice that he will quickly exit his unit. This is good police training. He cannot be at a disadvantage. Next, and this is the most important point, voluntarily say to the officer that you already know that you are wrong. Do call him or her sir or ms., and be as cooperative as you can. When the officer asks for your insurance papers, or registration papers, like most owners, they will be kept in your glove compartment. Ask nicely, “Sir, the items are in my glove compartment, would you like to retrieve them?” This will assure the officer that you have nothing to hide such as a weapon or illegal contraband. Most owners do not follow these rules. They are too consumed about their rights and dignity. A police officer has wide discretions. What difference does it make to succumb to his few minutes of power? Get out of the ticket, arrive home safe, and keep your insurance rates low. Obey the law and be safe. Robert Davis is a former police officer. He has written a book called, “Cop Out” (iuniverse). His next project is a book on what to do and what not to do when accosted by a police officer in any situation. Mr Davis is an avid reader of all subjects, a personal trainer, and loves hiking. He is a true outdoorsman and hunter. The foreword to his book is written by well known priest Father George Clements of Chicago. A major motion picture about his life was made titled, The Father George Clements Story, starring Lou Gossett jr. and Malcolm Jamal Warner. 10 Tips on How to Respond to a Personal Ad

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By David Kamau You have seen a personal ad that you like and now you want to respond. Most people do it wrong and then wonder why they never get a reply. While there are “secrets” or guarantees, here are 10 tips on how to respond to a personal ad to help you stand out from the crowd. 1. Write in advance. Draft your response. Use a word processor (Word, WordPad etc.) to check spelling and grammar. Just remember that a word processor cannot tell the difference between “live” and “leave”. 2. Personalize it. Never use a generic response. Nobody likes a “canned” response. Each email should be written to that particular person. Visualizing a real person and writing him/her helps. Want to contact many people as quickly as possible? Create a template and save it in your computer (or on paper). Then personalize it for each contact. 3. Study the person’s ad and look for clues on how to reply. In your response, tell how or why you may fit with their hopes, desires and personality. 4. Avoid overused, generic terms like “Hi_, can we chat?” or “Response to your ad”. Use the subject of the email to catch attention: most people look at the subject to decide whether to open the email. If you have received responses for your personal ads, study the ones that attract your attention and model yours from them. 5. Write more than one line. Tell something about yourself. Give a compliment but avoid commenting on the person’s looks, especially when writing to a pretty woman (how many others have done that?). You could mention what attracted you to their ad. Ask questions about something they wrote. Show keen, genuine interest. 6. Don’t write a novel. Long messages can be intimidating, especially if the person has received lots of responses. They simply get deleted. Keep it short and sweet. 7. Don’t ask for personal information at this point. And never reveal personal information on first contact. 8. Unless the person has said he/she is looking for a casual relationship, don’t mention anything suggestive of sex. A “friends first” approach works best. 9. Avoid negativity. Don’t mention past failed relationships. And don’t brag. If you like something about yourself or have a special talent, sneak it in without touting your horn. Example, “My friends say I play the piano really well.” 10. Be pleasant, courteous and positive. And above all, be honest. Don’t say you work out regularly at the gym, as impressive as it may seem, when you know you’re couch potatoes. There you have 10 tips on how to respond to a personal ad. Take your time and write a winner. It could mean the difference between success and failure in getting you the person you seek. Metal Outdoor Furniture - Explained

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Debbie Rodgers Mention metal patio furniture and you probably think of the light, fly-away aluminium loungers of your youth or that half-ton cast iron table and chair set on your neighbour’s lawn. But metal outdoor furniture has come a long way. Here’s a quick primer on the available types and their care. Construction Methods Metal is fashioned into furniture in one of three main ways: extrusion, casting, and welding. Extrusion forces melted metal through long pipes and forms long narrow tubes of metal, sometimes solid, but often hollow. Casting metal involves a form, or cast, shaped like the finished product. The molten metal is poured into the form and then the form is removed when the metal has solidified. Cast pieces are almost always solid. Forging, a process in which metal is heated and hammered into shape produces the type of furniture known as “wrought” metal. It uses pipes and various solid pieces of the metal and joins them together by welding or bolting. Common Materials The most common metal outdoor furniture is made from iron or aluminium, although the use of steel, especially stainless steel, is growing. Iron is a chemical element that is naturally malleable and rusts easily. Vintage pieces, usually in black or dark green, can be found at premium prices and must be carefully maintained to prevent further rusting. Modern reproduction pieces will usually have a rust-resistant finish or coating that protects against chipping, scratching and corrosion. There are a variety of finishes available such as primer and paint, powder coatings and galvanizing. They are available in a range of colors and styles. Since iron is heavy and solid, it is well-suited for windy spots where light furniture might be blown away. Don’t expect it to be highly portable, though. Well-cared for, iron furnishings can last for 100 years. Much of the iron furniture available today is wrought iron, rather than cast iron. When you’re buying wrought iron, look for pieces made with solid metal rather than hollow tubing, and that are welded, rather than bolted, together. Generally, the better furniture is North American made. Iron furniture requires more maintenance than other types of metal furniture. Clean it regularly with warm soapy water and then dry it thoroughly. Wax the smooth surfaces and apply mineral or baby oil to textured surfaces. Oil springs and moving parts once per year. Immediately touch up any scratches or rust by lightly sanding the spot with a fine steel wool. Then apply several thin coats of metal paint, letting each coat dry well before applying the next. If you’re using a spray paint, apply with short light stokes. Aluminum is a silvery, lightweight and easily worked metallic element that never rusts. Much of the early aluminum furniture from the 1960s was made from hollow-core extrusion tubing. Such furniture was extremely lightweight but not exceedingly wind-stable. Such pieces are still available today and are best used around a pool area. Cast aluminum is better used in outdoor dining or sitting areas. Whether you’re looking for extruded, cast or wrought aluminum items, there are a few items that indicate a quality piece. As with wrought iron, joints should be welded (preferably full-circumference welds) rather than bolted. If bolts are used, for example to connect webbing, they should be made of aluminum or stainless steel. Otherwise they will begin to rust even though the main frame does not. Best quality aluminum pieces have a powder-coated finish, which determines the final color of the piece and the durability of the metal. Powder coating is a process in which colorful polyester powders are applied and then baked onto the frame. If you’re buying aluminum furniture with vinyl webbing or straps, look for vinyl that has been processed with mildew inhibitors and ultraviolet stabilizers. Any wooden pieces mounted on aluminum frames should be treated with a finish to guarantee durability. Suntan oils, human perspiration, car exhaust and salt spray can all eat away at the powder coating on aluminum furniture. To ensure long life, clean your aluminum furniture twice a month with a solution of mild dish detergent and warm water. Rinse well. You can then apply paste car wax to any smooth finish frames. Steel, a hard tough metal, is an alloy of iron and various small percentages of metallic elements. The alloys produce hardness and resistance to rusting. Galvanized steel has been plated with zinc; stainless steel has been alloyed with chromium and is virtually immune to rust and corrosion. Before the production of aluminum furniture in the mid 20th century, steel furniture was common, dating from popular French-made items manufactured in the later half of the 1800s. American companies used solid steel until the Second World War when the heavy military demand for steel dictated the use of lightweight tubular (hollow) steel in outdoor furniture. Vintage steel sets can still be found at flea markets. If you’re looking at modern steel furniture, be sure the product is either stainless or powder-coated and that any hardware used is also rust-resistant. Metal outdoor furniture in its many shapes and designs can be a wonderful addition to your outdoor living space. Choose wisely and enjoy!
